3 SIMPLE WAYS TO

BUILD CONNECTIONS

  • TRAVEL

“I loooooove traveling! I went to Paris for the first time at Christmas, and it was absolutely awesome. Do you have any travel plans coming up?”

  • FOOD

“I totally love eating out and finding new restaurants. Last week I discovered a new taco truck around the corner, and I went three nights in a row! Do you have any favorite places to eat around here?”

  • PETS

“Last year, I got a Schnauzer puppy named Nala, and she’s adorable. She loves going to the dog park. Do you have any pets?” (If they have a dog, ask what they like to do with their pet and for suggestions. People love being helpful!)

How Do You Build Connections?

People hire people they like — it’s a golden rule of recruitment.

And people usually like people who are similar to them.

So I coach candidates to actively build rapport and find commonalities with the interviewers.

An easy way to do this is to hijack the most common opening question in an interview:

“Tell us about yourself.”

You can use that question to start a conversation and build a connection.

Doing this will start building a bond, make the interview feel more like a conversation, and help everyone in the room relax.
